The problem with buying glasses online

buying glasses online

While many of us increasingly enjoy the convenience of online shopping, it remains that some things should simply be bought in a regular store. For example, jeans are in the must-try-on-first category for many people. Unless you’re a swimwear model, bikinis might also fit in that boat. And, for different reasons, glasses are best bought in store, from your optometrist writes Andrew Kotsos, Optometrist, eyeclarity.

Every pair of glasses is unique. Not only are there different designs and materials of both frames and lenses, as well as different lens treatments, but each person’s head and eyes are shaped differently, too. Frames that are too large or that don’t fit the bridge of your nose properly can slip, be irritating or adversely affect your vision.

Optometrists ensure all of these factors are taken into consideration so your needs can be properly met, addressing your eye health and your style. You also have the opportunity to physically try on the frames to see how a pair of glasses looks on you.

It’s important to understand that the prescription strength and weight of your lenses also contribute to whether your glasses will be comfortable and look good.

While it might be tempting to search for more convenient or cheaper options online, it can often lead to more money being spent in the long run.

Quite often, eyewear ordered online fails to meet at least one parameter of optical or impact testing. In my practice, eyeclarity,  we often field complaints from customers who are disappointed when the fit isn’t comfortable or the lenses look funny in the chosen frames.

An optometrist will often be a good judge of whether the frames you love will work for you, or whether they will be difficult for your particular prescription. They will also be able to inform you about newer technologies and special features such as superior lens coatings and treatments that will make your glasses more attractive and comfortable.
