Canadian singer and husband to Celine Dion, Rene Angelil, has died aged 73 after a lengthy battle with throat cancer.
Formerly Dion’s manager, Angelil is survived by the couple’s three sons, Rene-Charles, 14, and five-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy, as well as his children from an earlier marriage – Patrick, Jean-Pierre and Anne-Marie.
Rene was diagnosed with the cancer in 1998, but only passed away from the disease in their Las Vegas home overnight.
Angelil and Dion first met in 1981 when they were aged just 38 and 12 respectively. He became her manager and in 1994, they married.
The couple did not hide his illness over the years. Dion, 47, spoke to USA Today in August 2015, saying that Angelil wanted to die in her arms.
“Rene says to me, ‘I want to die in your arms.’ OK … I’ll be there, you’ll die in my arms,” she said.
Spokesman for the family, Marc Olivier, said the family asks to be let to mourn in private.
“The family asks that they be left to mourn in private. More information will be given in the coming days,” Mr Olivier said.
