While visiting Shanghai for the star-studded Shanghai International Film Festival this week, Sir Ian McKellen took some time off in his busy schedule to advertise himself at the Shanghai Marriage Market in People’s Square.
Described as match.com meets a farmers market, the Shanghai Marriage Market is a place for parents to find a suitable partner for their child. As a starting point for finding true love for their offspring, keen parents write key statistics including age, height, income, education and Chinese zodiac sign on a piece of paper, which is then hung upon long strings among other parents’ advertisements for their children.
Not one to miss out, McKellen decided to try his luck and have a spot of fun with a sign of his own, which was posted on the British Council’s Weibo page.
Highlighting that he’s still active at age 77, McKellen also mentioned his Cambridge education and house in London, but failed to mention his reported $55 million net worth.
While he may be best known for his portrayal of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, the festival showcased his role as an acclaimed Shakespearean actor on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
As a tribute to Shakespeare, McKellen has been keeping a unique photo diary holding up placards featuring quotes from Shakespeare plays around China’s key landmarks.
